Safe Return and Renewed Hope for Sujan Kisku

14-year-old Sujan Kisku from Jhapa Rural Municipality 2, Nepal suddenly went missing on June 25, 2025, leaving his economically vulnerable family in deep distress. His parents, daily wage laborers struggling to support their two children, searched desperately for days. With guidance from a returnee volunteer, Ms. Dilai Hasda from Caritas Nepal the family reported the case to Caritas Nepal on July 3, 2025, seeking urgent assistance.

According to Sujan’s interpretation, he was abducted by two unidentified individuals on a motorcycle who threatened him with knives and forcibly transported him across the Nepal – India border. He recalls being taken to Kishanganj, West Bengal India and later traveling by train for two days and nights with minimal food. He overheard discussions about being sold, leaving him terrified and traumatized.

Demonstrating remarkable courage, Sujan escaped when his abductors fell asleep during a train stop. A compassionate woman noticed his distress and alerted local police, leading to his placement in protective custody. He was later transferred to Don Bosco Abu Illam Child Welfare Centre in Coimbatore for temporary care and rehabilitation.

Upon receiving the report with consultation with his parents Caritas Nepal team immediately coordinated with the Child Welfare Centre Nepal, local authorities, and the Embassy of Nepal, New Delhi to secure official release documentation from Don Bosco Abu Illam Child Welfare Centre to Nepal. Travel arrangements were made for Sujan’s parents to Tamil Nadu, India ensuring a safe and dignified reunification process. Following embassy authorization, Sujan was formally handed over to his parents. The reunion was emotional filled with tears of relief, gratitude and renewed hope.

Today, Sujan is happy and living safely with his family. He receives regular counseling support to heal from trauma and rebuild confidence. With support from the Project, he was reenrolled in the school has also received a new bicycle and stationery support enabling him to travel to school easily and consistently.

This case powerfully demonstrates that timely action, cross-border coordination, and compassionate intervention can restore a child’s safety, dignity and future.
